Adaptogens take up an important part of my diet. I consume them every single day. But somehow I realized there was no blog post here dedicated to these fabulous little substances. So today I’m bringing you one of my go-to morning elixirs, combining a few of the adaptogens I use the most in my daily life.
Funny enough, I shared a little survey with my readers over the weekend (if you haven’t responded yet, I’d be immensely grateful if you would take 3 minutes of your time to do so here!), and many of the people who responded said they wanted simple recipes, made with every day ingredients that are easy to find.
Now I know ashwaganda and pine pollen powder are not your typical grocery store ingredients and that finding them can be a challenge, especially if you live in remote areas. But I truly believe that the more people will buy and demand ingredients like these, the more mainstream and widely available they will become.
ADAPTOGENS: WHAT THEY ARE AND WHY YOU SHOULD CONSUME THEM
Adaptogens are a unique class of botanicals and that have been used for thousands of years to promote health and wellbeing. They essentially work as regulators and help the body adapt to changing situations and stressors – hence why they are referred to as “adaptogens”. They are great for helping the body cope with stress, for balancing hormones, boosting immunity and enhancing mood, among many other functions.
Because we live in such hectic and stressful times, I believe that most people would benefit from adding adaptogens to their diets. If you think you might be experiencing adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues, anxiety or any form of stress, you might want to consider giving them a try. However, pregnant women should be careful and consult their doctor before taking any adaptogen.
A few of the most common adaptogens are Maca, Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Rhodiola, Siberian Ginseng, Licorice Root, Pine Pollen, Mucuna Pruriens, and some medicinal mushrooms like Chaga, Reishi or Cordyceps.
Adaptogens can be found in various forms, including powder, tinctures, capsules and herbs. My favourite ways to enjoy them are as teas (from dried herbs), or in powder form that I can quickly add to my smoothies, oats or morning elixirs (like this one here!).
This hazelnut latté contains ashwagandha (great at balancing thyroid function and boosting the immune system), pine pollen (a complete protein, great for libido and hormone regulation) and maca (great for enhancing mood and boosting energy). This is one of my absolute favourite things to drink in the morning. This little elixir is not only a health powerhouse, it tastes absolutely heavenly. A delicious way to get your body ready to face the day.

Notes on the recipe: I use Prana’s Organic Hazelnut Butter and it is hands down the most delicious I’ve ever tasted. It truly elevates this drink and I highly recommend it, but of course any other hazelnut butter will do too. As for the adaptogens, you can use any of the ones you have on hand. I buy my adaptogens in health food stores, but you can also order them online – Sun Potion has an impressive variety.
- ½ cup plant-based milk of your choice (I used homemade almond milk)
- ⅓ cup brewed coffee or herbal coffee of your choice
- 1 tbsp hazelnut butter (I highly recommend Prana's - see notes above)
- Sweetener of your choice (1 date or 1 tsp pure maple syrup), or to taste
- 1 tsp maca powder
- 1 tsp ashwagandha powder
- 1 tsp pine pollen powder
- Start by warming the milk in a small saucepan over low heat. Don't worry if it separates or curdle, it will be blended up in just a minute.
- Once warm, transfer to a blender along with the hot coffee, hazelnut butter, sweetener and adaptogens. Blend at high-speed until smooth and foamy. Taste and adjust for sweetness if needed.
- Pour in a mug and enjoy immediately.
